Finding joy in pain

Recently, I’ve been hearing more voices sharing their pain, and I’m realising how it takes on different forms.

For example, I may look perfectly fine, and you might think I’m the happiest person around. But you could never imagine how much this seemingly happy person has cried alone on the floor at home. I’ve always struggled to tell people how depressed I sometimes feel, believing it wasn’t possible to be both happy and sad. Yet, I’ve learned you can indeed feel happy, sad, empty, and fulfilled all at once. It’s complex, but that’s precisely how life is.

I have heard people talking about how they have felt a joy in their pain, and I can’t disagree.

Remembering my dad every day is painful and it hurts me each time. But if given the option to rid myself of these emotions that plague me every day, disturb my mental well-being, and alter me as a person, in a heartbeat, I would say no. A resounding no. For they have shaped who I am today, and I am continually evolving because of what happened to me and what I’ve endured. So no, I would never give up those emotions, those feelings and those experiences. They have filled me with so much wisdom and understanding, and without those experiences, I would not be the person I am today. Though I am still learning to accept what has happened, I refuse to let it pass without drawing meaning from it.

Pain has the power to transform us, yet ultimately, it’s our decision which emotions we choose to prioritize. We cannot escape feeling helpless, and, in my opinion, it never truly fades away. However, if we make a conscious effort to focus on our purpose and draw motivation from our experiences, we can go a long way. Now, it all makes complete sense when they say, ‘Everything happens for a reason,’ especially when it is bad; it never arrives without a lesson. We are constantly learning, and these are the real lessons that help us evolve. Today, I can confidently say that I am the person I am because of what I’ve endured. May this be the chapter one of your healing story as well.

  • Stay strong girl. Am sure your time to make your parents feel proud is not too far. You are the strongest girl i’ve ever seen.

  • Hmm, well written there. I appreciate your point of view; carrying the meaning out of every emotion. That’s great, but there is another angle from what I look at as well: what if these events never occur in a person’s life and the life would have been shaped differently, maybe better? I believe that every cause comes with its result, and humans always tend to go with what they have been through, denying the quality of results from other possibilities. Anyway, I am not in a state to judge your thoughts; everyone has their own experiences in life. Btw, I appreciate your mentality; going through such phases is hard. I can feel the pain in your words, as I have gone through similar experiences, and I can say that I usually give up during such times. Nicely written, Roop. Looking forward to reading more of your thoughts.
